The wainscot or dado is the lower wall tile adjoining the floor, capped in turn by the chair rail tile wood, or plaster molding detail. It's original function was to protect the wall finish from chair backs and furniture. This trim may be discrete or highly ornate, in styles ranging from Classic to Art Nouveau. Wainscots and other borders are fine places for sculpted or hand-painted tile.
