Marble, favorite of the Greeks and Romans, is a crystalline metamorphic rock derived from limestone. To qualify as marble, the stone must be capable of taking a polish. Marble is more durable than limestone yet softer than granite, both in hardness and in hue. Marble begs for sensuous curves and comes in a variety of shades and textures, often with intricate vein patterning caused by minerals.
